So you've run into some trouble or you've gone and hunted for it. Now you're in a battle.

Battles are turn-based. Each member of your Active party gets a chance to do something and each of the enemies have a chance to do something. You can view who's turn it is currently and who's turn is next by clicking the Turn Order tab.

During your character's turn, you can command them to perform an Action or a Move. You can perform these in any order that you wish. Action, Move. Move, Action. Action, Move, Action. Move, Action, Move, Action, Move. You get the idea.

Actions consume Action Points and require you to be within range of the target. Action Points which are not spent are saved for the next turn. However, a character can only save a maximum of 100 Action Points.

Moves consume Movement Points and require an unobstructed path. Movement Points which are not spent are saved for the next turn. However, a character can only save a maximum of 100 Movement Points.

Once you have accomplished your Actions and Moves, you must End Turn.

And so it goes down the list of turns as you and the enemy whittle away at each other's Defense Points and Health Points.

[edit] Death

If a character's Health Points reach 0 they will be pronounced "dead as dead". These characters will not be able to perform any Actions or Moves. At their next turn, their body will fade from the battlefield.

Dead characters will still exist after the battle, but require recovery by being placed on the Inactive roster.

If any characters die in battle but you still manage a victory, there are no penalties.

[edit] Fleeing

If you move a character to one of the unobstructed edges of the map, they will be presented with an opportunity to Flee From Battle. If your character flees from battle, they will be removed from the battlefield, but the battle will continue without them.

  • if all your characters flee (or some die and the rest flee), you will still lose the battle. If the battle is an encounter that’s part of a mission, you will most likely fail the mission (failed missions can usually be reset from the Missions menu)
  • when you flee, you are not returned to a safe point, but instead you will find yourself in the same location you were in at the start of battle

[edit] Defeat

Losing a battle is accomplished if your entire party on the battlefield has fled or been killed.

  • if your entire party gets wiped out, you will be returned to a “safe point” – usually (at least for now) this will be the center of the last town you visited
  • if you lose a battle but at least one character escapes by fleeing, you will not be returned to a safe point, you remain in your current location and you will lose 10% of your gold (with a maximum that scales based on your highest skill level)

[edit] Victory

Winning a battle is accomplished if all the enemies on the battlefield are killed.

  • a varying amount of gold is rewarded at the end of a battle
  • all the items that were equipped by the enemies will be available for you to loot provided that your party has enough space in their inventory
